Navigating the Path to Recovery: A Guide for Amputees

Losing a limb is an incredibly challenging experience, both emotionally and physically. At Relimb™ we understand the complexities involved in adapting to life after limb loss. That is why we have streamlined our patient pathway to provide comprehensive care and support every step of the way.

The Relimb™ One-Stop Shop

Our goal at Relimb™ is to offer a one-stop shop where individuals who have experienced limb loss can access a range of surgical and non-surgical treatments. Whether you are dealing with upper or lower limb amputation, partial hand loss or facial injury, we are here to help. Our solutions may involve bony or soft-tissue surgery, possibly combined with osseointegrated bone-anchors.

The Pathway to Treatment

Accessing treatment at Relimb™ is straightforward:

  1. Referral: Your journey begins with an initial referral to our team.
  2. Relimb clinics: access to our surgical team for full assessment and formulation of a treatment plan.
  3. Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Assessment: For those considering Osseointegration you will meet with our full MDT to discuss your needs and explore treatment options as well as have all scans and anesthetic assessments to enable you to proceed to surgery. The MDT can also provide a quote for help with legal case preparation
  4. Surgery: If surgery is recommended, our experienced team will perform the necessary procedures.
  5. Rehabilitation: Rehabilitation is a crucial part of the recovery process. We partner with Dorset Orthopaedic to ensure you receive comprehensive care.
  6. Follow-Up: After surgery, you will return for regular reviews to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Collaboration and Support

We welcome referrals from all sources and encourage collaboration with your preferred rehabilitation providers. Your therapist, prosthetist, case manager, or solicitor can accompany you to our clinics, where they will have the opportunity to meet our team and provide valuable input.

Who May Benefit from Treatment?

While our treatments offer hope to many, there are certain factors that may impact eligibility, including:

  • Smoking habits
  • Immunosuppressive medication use
  • Obesity

We are happy to discuss these issues and how they may impact your treatment options.

Osseointegration Rehabilitation

For all our patients undergoing osseointegration surgery initial rehabilitation will be provided by Dorset Orthopaedic. Once this phase is complete, you are free to return to your original rehabilitation provider if you wish.

Ongoing Care and Monitoring

We believe in long-term support for our patients. After surgery you will return for regular reviews, particularly if you have had an osseointegrated bone-anchor inserted. Regular communication and follow up is essential for us to ensure you have a consistent, successful outcome.

Financial Considerations

While we strive to provide accessible care, please note that the cost of initial consultations may not be covered by standard health insurance. We are committed to transparency and will work with you to explore your options for funding consultations.
